On April 25th, Rebuilding Together NYC welcomed 100 volunteers to the Rockaways to rebuild 5 homes that were damaged by Hurricane Sandy almost two and a half years earlier. Though water levels were chest-high in Rockaway Queens during Hurricane Sandy’s peak storm tides, not all residents were able to evacuate and many did not own flood insurance before the storm. Two years later, much recovery work remained for the storm-battered community. With generous volunteer and corporate support, Rebuilding Together NYC rehabilitated this Queens community damaged by Hurricane Sandy. As a part of Rebuilding Together, Inc.’s National Rebuilding Day, Rebuilding Together NYC rebuilt 5 homes and installed 50 solar-powered safety lights.
With the help of our sponsors and volunteers, we were able to:
— Install kitchen cabinets and a new storm door
— Insulate ceilings and install drywall
— Provide interior and exterior painting renovations
— Repair storm-damaged subfloors
— Demo an entire house: kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and living room
We would like to thank all of our sponsors and partners on the Rockaway rebuilding project including the New York State Affordable Housing Corporation, American Red Cross, MLB Players Trust, Shawmut Design and Construction, Grant Thorton, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, Credit Suisse, and Friends of Rockaway.
