Mission and Challenge
Rebuilding Together NYC (RT NYC) is a nonprofit organization that transforms the lives of low-income New Yorkers by improving the safety and health of their homes and revitalizing our communities. We provide free critical home repairs, accessibility modifications, workforce training and development, and community center renovations for low-income persons and nonprofit facilities throughout New York City.
Since 2013, RT NYC has repaired 144 homes and 40 community centers, benefiting more than 50,000 community members in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Manhattan, and the Bronx. But more work needs to be done—between 2011 and 2014, the number of dilapidated buildings in New York City doubled. Did you know that the average income in NYC is $32,459 with 20.6% of people living in poverty? Homelessness is currently at an all-time high, with more than 60,500 adults and children spending the night in city shelters.
The families we serve do not have the resources to make needed repairs to their homes. If critical repairs are not made, these families will be forced to live in unsafe, unsanitary, and unhealthy conditions or to abandon their homes altogether. We currently have a wait list of more than 200 low-income families in need of critical home repairs, and that need continues to grow.
Why help RT NYC expand?
Rebuilding Together NYC is embarking on a large capital project to build a multipurpose facility that will include new offices with meeting rooms, warehouse space, parking, a training facility, and a store where people can shop for salvaged building materials and appliances.
In recent years, Rebuilding Together NYC has grown from one full time staff member to 10 full time staff – quickly outgrowing our current 1,200 square foot office space. In order to better serve our community, we are building out a 4,350 square foot office space in Gowanus, Brooklyn. It will include meeting rooms, warehouse space, a training facility, and our Salvage Store! Our growth is a testament to the demands of the community and the needs that we fill. Please join us on this exciting journey as we work together not only to build a new home for ourselves, but to also build our capacity to provide even more programs and assistance for low-income families and neighborhoods.

Why RT NYC’s model works?
Rebuilding Together NYC is continuously working to increase the affordable housing stock in New York City. We increase the longevity of the homes we work in by addressing repair issues that would otherwise leave the homes in disrepair and substandard living conditions. When left unaddressed, these repair needs lead to larger structural issues in the home and increased economic hardship for the families. By providing simple repairs that increase the integrity of the home (including weatherization upgrades, replacing flooring, and roof repairs), Rebuilding Together NYC effectively preserves the affordability of the home while allowing the family to remain safely in their community.
Our work helps to preserve homes and rebuild communities by arming volunteers and workforce participants with hammers, paint brushes, and dedication to service. Our volunteers are committed to making a difference in the neighborhoods they live and work in by helping our neighbors improve their living conditions and their lives. Our work extends beyond the four walls of a home to impact the health and vibrancy of our community. Your contribution will enable our countless volunteers to join together in the common goal of ensuring that families are able to live in safety, warmth, and dignity.
Where You Come In
In order to meet the increased demand for our services, Rebuilding Together NYC needs your help to raise $200,000 to expand our office facility in order to serve more families throughout New York City.
Now, more than ever, we need your support. Please join us on this journey as we work not only to build a new home, but to also provide even more families with a safe and healthy home.
