Hurricane Sandy Rebuild for Army Veteran Kicks-Off Sears Sixth Annual Heroes at Home Program

May 10th 2013 – Sears Heroes at Home and Rebuilding Together have teamed up for the sixth year to improve the lives of America’s military families. Launching its annual spring renovation campaign in a community devastated by Hurricane Sandy, Heroes at Home is rebuilding the home of U.S. veteran Michael Chirieleison, with strong support from his local Red Hook community.

Vietnam Army veteran Michael “Mickey” Chirieleison is the current commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 5195 in Red Hook. Mickey, born and raised in Brooklyn, had his home handed down to him in 2000 when his boss, the former VFW commander, passed away. His home was devastated by Hurricane Sandy in 2012 when more than 11 feet of water sped into his home; Mickey’s now-gutted home is in tremendous need of renovations and repairs.

Congresswoman NydiaVelazquez joined volunteers and spoke to Sandy-affected homeowners during the event.

To date, Sears has raised nearly $17 million for Heroes at Home – and Mickey’s renovation is one of the hundreds of projects that can be made possible through generous consumer donations both in-store and online at Sears.

Volunteers from Credit Suisse helped in the Rebuilding efforts.

RED HOOK - Six months after Superstorm Sandy struck, many residents in Red Hook are still struggling to recover.

A program, sponsored by Sears, Heroes at Home and Rebuilding Together, is helping to repair some of the homes damaged in the storm.

Dozens of volunteers were in Red Hook today to help some of homeowners get back on their feet.

We had to share this card, sent to us by 16-year old Sasha. She was moved to take pictures of the destruction caused by Sandy and then made & sold cards in support of recovery efforts. Thank you Sasha – we are absolutely honored to have your support in the rebuilding of New York City homes and lives.

Brooklyn Recovery Fund Awards $200,000 to Rebuilding Together NYC

Rebuilding Together NYC is thrilled to have the support of the Brooklyn Recovery Fund and the Brooklyn Community Foundation for rebuilding work in Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn. In addition, Rebuilding Together NYC will be partnering with several other grantees to provide free critical rebuilding services to affected homeowners throughout Brooklyn. Rebuilding Together NYC and Partners Ring Opening Bell

Chelsea Muller, Executive Director of Rebuilding Together NYC, helped to ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange on January 8^th, alongside partners from the Preservation Resource Center of New Orleans. The Preservation Resource Center of New Orleans are the organizers of Voulez Vous Gala, which is to be held on January 17^th, 2013.

Rebuilding Together NYC is very fortunate to be the beneficiary of a portion of the proceeds from the benefit. Rebuilding Together NYC Board President, Stephen Dundon, also attended and alongside Chelsea, received valuable advice from a floor trader. Here is a link to the video/interview.
